Pillow Talk

Are you like me,
you like being able to lay in bed
late at night
and talk with the one you love.
We sometimes call it
pillow talk.
It works best when you
both go to bed around the same time.
Sometimes you miss it when that does not happen.
Can you imagine if God said to you
I miss it --
our pillow talk.
God is always willing to
have pillow talk with you.
What if we made sure
God never had to say I miss it
our pillow talk.

In the Light

When you close your eyes and pray
what or who do you see?
Do you see situations
or people in need of support?
What if as you saw them
you envisioned yourself
wrapping them in a blanket
of the light of the Divine?
What if you saw yourself
praying with them?
Have you ever felt
as if someone is sending
you the love and light of
the Ultimate?
Have you ever considered
that just as you see others
when you close your eyes,
someone is seeing you
when they close theirs.
May we sit in this light and
hold each other in the light
of the Ultimate

Hold Up the World

What if we thought about prayer
as a building block,
as a foundation
which holds up the world?

What if the only reason
the world still exists is
because there are those who pray
and hold up the world with
their faith,
their belief,
and their prayers.

May we hold up the world
each day
by offering up our prayers
for ourselves,
for others,
for our communities
for our countries
and for the world

do you squeeze God
in at the end?

Start your day by
spending time with God
then know that the time
will be given to you
to accomplish all you
need that day.

I start my day by giving thanks
for my blessings,
for that which inspires me
and that which I intend to manifest.

Develop the Inner Visionary

Working on some spiritual practices in our lives is easier then others. It is easy to think about how to practice kindness, gratitude, joy, kindness, or even play. However thinking about practicing vision requires us to think outside the box. So I was excited when I found the writing of Angeles Arrien, in The Four-Fold Way Walking the Paths of the Warrior, Teacher, Healer and Visionary. She offers some concrete steps and things we can do to practice developing our inner visionary. So I thought this week I would share her ideas with you.

Sacred Activism

It is hard to talk about justice without talking about the activist work, intentionally or accidentally, which is needed to bring change in our world. While there are things that are going well and are worthy of being celebrated in the ongoing fight for human rights and justice, there are also numerous crises facing our world including extreme poverty, environmental destruction and depletion, emotional, mental and relationship disconnects in life. In efforts to bring about systemic and structural change, activists often feel discouraged and doubt their ability to make a difference. Building on the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi and Martin Luther King, Jr., Andrew Harvey offers an approach known as sacred activism, which engages compassion and love. Harvey offers eleven practices which we can do to engage in sacred activism in our daily lives. These practices call on us deepen and nourish our personal connection with spirit and then to use this deeper connection in our actions to transform this world.

1. Be Grateful. Harvey suggests that each day we write down one thing which make you feel grateful to be alive.

Pierre Teilhard de Chardin captures an important aspect of faith in these lines from a prayer.

Breathing in: Trust in . . .
Breathing out: the slow work of God.

How many of us remember to trust in the slow work of God? Last year, one of my students said to me, “It sure would be nice if God could answer your prayers in the same amount of time it takes to get a Happy Meal.” I had to stop and remind him that Happy Meals do not always make you happy, at least not in the long run, and that they are not always healthy. However his question got at an important point. How often do we expect God to hear and answer our prayers instantaneously? Do we only trust in God when they are answered quickly or do we trust in the slow work of God?

Who Is Our Neighbor?

As I watched this video, it reminded me of a scripture from the New Testament which said there were two commandments we are to follow, First, “the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength.’ The second is this, "You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ There is no other commandment greater than these" (Mark 12:30-31). Other spiritual writings teach a similar lesson; we are to love God and we are to love our neighbor as ourselves.

That raises a question similar to the one raised in the video. Who are our neighbors? Who are they?

P.E.A.C.E.

Recently, I was rereading a reflection by Iyanla Vanzant and she listed Peace as an acronym for Please Excuse All Crazy Experiences. We all have “crazy” experiences in our lives. By “crazy” I mean anything which causes us to be extremely enthusiastic or extremely angry, irritated, frustrated, agitated etc. Crazy can include all those experiences that take us to the extreme from being crazy about shoes (i.e. I know someone that has over 300 pairs of shoes and keeps buying them) to that place of extreme agitation and anger where one is in need of therapeutic care to help restore balance. Sometimes we have those experiences in our life, which can easily pull us off balance and make us feel “crazy”, such as pain, anger, loneliness, being tired, hunger, and sickness. I know when I am extremely tired, due to the lack of sleep I am experiencing, I have to work intentionally at staying focused and centered and am constantly asking the Ultimate to give me energy to balance out my tired.

Lessons from a One Legged Duck

Several years ago, someone asked me how I came to this space of compassion for humanity in my life. I remember the question as if it were yesterday. At first, I was not sure how I was going to answer the question, and then this simple word floated up from my heart – LIFE.

I once heard LIFE was an acronym for Love Is For Everyone. The simplicity of that message resonated with me because it was part of what I have learned my entire life. It was a valuable lesson I learned from my parents who made room in their hearts for an infant who was looking for a home. My parents believed that their love, as parents, was for me and for my two brothers who arrived a few years later. Love is for everyone.

You are the answer to your prayer!

Recently I read someone’s blog where they spoke about how they were waiting for God to hear and answer their prayers. As I read it, I had this image of God as a virtual assistant. Then I had this kind of comedic conversation going on in my head. “God, thank you for checking in this morning. Listen, this is what I need you to do for me. I need you to find a job for the people on this list, heal the people on this list, bless the people on this list, and in your spare time, can you end world hunger, restore world peace, dismantle the systems of inequality, and help it to be on earth as it is in heaven

It’s Your Birthday!

No, I did not get that wrong and no, I did not get it twisted. Today is each of our birthdays, as is tomorrow, as is the day after that and the day after that. Every day is a new day and a fresh birth into our lives. None of is exactly the same person biologically, emotionally, mentally, or spiritually then we were they day before. As Alice Walker once wrote, “It’s never the same river twice.” Our lives are this constant state of evolution and change. Caterpillars spin cocoons, go through a transformation process, and then emerge as butterflies.

In the Meantime

Have you ever been in a relationship where you were not quite sure whether you wanted to leave or how you wanted to leave? Have you ever had a conflict with someone and not been quite sure what to say or how to mend those fences? Have you ever had a vision of something you want to do, but not known when or how to do it? If you have, then you were in the meantime. In the meantime is what happens or what you do while something else is happening or until something else happens. It is that season in our lives where we might feel like we are living our lives in limbo.
