Maybe it is the theme for this month, but I have found myself singing and/or listening to Julie Andrews sing A Few of My Favorite Things several times this month. I love this song, especially as a reminder to practice play because it is all about the things that one enjoys and loves, like “Raindrops on roses and whiskers on kittens, Bright copper kettles and warm woolen mittens, Brown paper packages tied up with strings, These are a few of my favorite things.”
So I started thinking about some of my favorite things.
Cuddling with my kittens and having them lick me.
Baking cookies with friends and sharing home made meals and creating memories
Driving around with Zoe watching the lights and decorations
Playing Mexican Train or Scrabble with friends.
Back rubs, massages, and getting a pedicure.
Movie nights with friends eating popcorn and pizza
Reading a book that inspires me or makes me laugh
The smell of my mother’s recipe for rugelach baking in the oven.
Baking with my niece Rebecca when she comes for a visit.
Crocheting afghans for us and friends while Mr Mittens plays with the yarn on the floor.
Watching the deer, rabbits and birds feed in our yard.
Flowers that bloom and seem to come out of nowhere.
Watching kids play in the snow and make snow angels.
Having snow ball fights with friends
Watching the leaves change colors
Trying new foods and expanding my horizongs.
Playing tag with the kids who come to visit.
Listening to Pharrell Williams sing Happy
Creating different ways of doing things like making grilled cheese sandwiches or waffles
Discovering different ways of using an appliance to do something differently, like grilled cheese sandwiches in the waffle iron.
The feel of a cup filled with hot cocoa or coffee or tea on a cold wintry day.
The smell of freshly cut grass
Memories of my parents that bring me back to my childhood
Time with friends
These are a few of my favorite things. They are what I turn to when I am feeling sad. They keep me from being blue and fill me with love, light, and positive energy.
