I have yet to meet someone who does not like tacos. Some people prefer corn vs flour tortillas. Others prefer crunchy over soft shells. Some prefer beef, others steak, chicken, fish, shrimp, or some other protein. It is not about whether or not people like tacos, but how they construct them
When we think about tacos, we think about something to eat. My guess is nobody thinks about it the way it was first used in the 18th century when it was the paper which was wrapped around gunpowder for small explosives.[1] It wasn’t about an explosion of tastes in one’s mouth, but about helping to create explosions in the mines.
As I have been thinking about tacos, I have come to realize that tacos are a great way of thinking about people’s spiritual journeys. We are all on one, even if one sees themselves as their Higher Power. We are all on a journey, it is just about how we construct one. Some need the harder structure that comes with some religious traditions while others like the flexibility that comes with other spiritual beliefs.
One of the blessings is that we each get to construct our personal journey in a similar way to how we are able to construct our tacos. We have the ability to experiment with textures, toppings, fillings, etc until we find the taco which best suits our taste buds and cravings. We have the ability to explore teachings, traditions, practices, etc until we find the path that feels like the perfect fit for us at that moment.
What is awesome is that we are not tied to one taco recipe for our entire life. We may start off as a carne aside taco in a hard corn tortilla shell but over time find that we become more of a fish taco in a flour tortilla kind of person, or one who needs the freedom to eat different kinds of tacos on any given day. Recently I met someone who had grown up in and with a given belief system, but has been feeling pulled in directions that are completely different then where she started. Some may stay on one path their entire lives, others may follow the paths which open up in their lives.
However you construct your tacos or your spiritual journeys, know I am here to support you in your journey.
