n my work with others as a spiritual partner, I so often hear people say things like, “I tell my children that all the time” or “I say that to my friends all the time.” We have internal wisdom we have learned over time and been taught by those who came before us. We so willingly share it with others, but when it comes to our own lives, we do not always tap into our own Divine wisdom.
I began thinking about the powerful lessons I have been taught by those who have come before me, learned through my own study and have also had to learn to digest and embody in my own life. This list is those things that I strive to remember each day and the nuggets of wisdom I share with my inner child when she needs to hear them, and sometimes when she does not.

I was once taught that the most dangerous states to live in are
the past and the present. Today is a new day! One thing so many people do is
spend their entire lives beating themselves up for something, which they said
or did or didn’t say or do years ago, but today is a new day. The past is the
past and you cannot go back and change it. What you do have control over is
today, so live it to its fullest, focusing on being the best you that you can
be today.

I am always grateful to my readers who
offer me inspiration as I work my way through this A to Z blogging challenge.
My friend Jerry suggested I blog about opinions because everyone has one. His
reason reminded me of what my wife Zoe says about opinions, which is actually a
line from the 1988 movie The Dead Pool.
“Opinions are like assholes. Everybody’s got one and everyone thinks everyone
else’s stinks.”
The dictionary defines opinion as “a belief or judgment
that rests on grounds insufficient to produce
complete certainty” and “a personal view, attitude,
or appraisal."
Opinions are not necessarily based on fact or knowledge. They are simply what
one personally believes. Some people change their opinion on something over
time. However, sometimes opinions become so ingrained in our psyche that they
are no longer an opinion, but a belief. If enough people hold the same opinion,
it can evolve into a belief system.

These words are the last of the four agreements Don Miguel Ruiz discusses in this book The Four Agreements. Sounds simple right; just do your best! This is what I tell my students all the time. I remind those I am journeying with of this all the time. This past week I had to remind myself that I was doing my best. One of the things about doing your best is recognizing that your best varies from moment to moment. My best when I was not journeying with Zoë through her diagnosis and treatment for breast cancer has been different then before this was a part of our journey together. My best when I was not trying to advocate for the restoration of my para transit services is quite different then now that I am. Last week and this past weekend as we were preparing for Zoë’s surgery and the unknowns about what she would and would not be able to do afterwards consumed quite a bit of my time and energy.

Last week, I talked about how the simple act of breathing can put the emotional brakes on our shenpa. Dr. Andrew Weil, a physician specializing in integrative medicine, said the “The single most effective relaxation technique I know is conscious regulation of breath.” Breathing is not just a sign that we are still alive and functioning. Breathing is a spiritual act, which bridges the mind and the body. If you pay close attention to your breathing, you will notice that there is this gap between your inhale and your exhale. This gap is said to be the movement of spirit within and through us. In many early languages, the words for spirit and breath are the same. Thus, breathing is not just necessary for our health and wellness, but it is the process through which we stay connected to the Creator.
Remembering to breathe allows us to relax, align our responses to anything out of love, and not fear. When we learn how to breathe, just breathe, we can begin to improve our physical, emotional, and spiritual well-being. When we work at being conscious of our breathing, we can begin to take advantage of the blessings and gifts that come with the simple act of breathing. Just breathe.
