Connecting the Dots

How do you do that she asked?
What?
See how x is related to y?
How do you do that?
As I sat and thought about it,
I realized I first learned to do it
with those connect the dot games
I used to do.
I loved watching the magic happen
as you figured out where to draw the line
in a way that allowed you to see something
more then just the dots.
There was so much more then just the dots.
There was a lesson focused on teaching me
how to connect the dots in my life.
When I draw upon that same imagination,
I begin to discover relationships
and meanings
and understandings that light up my world.
When I connect the dots today,
the world sheds light where I could not see.
and encourages me
to keep connecting the dots.

La Confidence

La Confidence

Have you ever seen an image
that transfixed you,
drew you in to a space
you could not seem to leave.
A piece of art that
that had such a powerful effect
on your soul
that decades later
you still remember that feeling.
It was the day I walked into the Museum of Art
at the University of Georgia
and stood before this painting
that was as tall as I am short
and literally took my breath away.
As I stared at these two women
whispering secrets to each other
I could see the blood moving through their veins.
I could hear them breathing.
I could feel the bond they shared.
I was not looking at an image.
I was in the garden with them
and had accidentally entered into this moment.
Art, is transformative.
It takes the pain and hurt in the world
and brings it to life in a way
that draws one in
and allows one to experience the Divine
in undescribable ways.
Whether is it paintings, sculptures, film, prose, poetry,
or other art form,
it has the potential to draw you in
and reveal to you
the presence of the Ultimate
in the unexpected.

Inspirations

Inspirations

It’s part of my daily ritual,
writing in my inspiration journal.
it is something I do without thinking
until I realized that many do not know
what inspires them or
how to inspire themselves.
It started when someone asked me
what inspires me and all I could think of was
the world.
So many things inspire me,
move me emotionally,
mentally,
physically, and
spiritually.
It can be a quote I read,
or a story someone told me,
a song I heard,
time by the canal
or at a beach,
the flowers or grass in our gardens
images,
photographs,
a cup of tea
a name that makes me stop like ming’s bings
a sound like a cat purring,
a feeling like the heat which keeps me warm,
a smell like freshly cut grass,
the taste of hot chocolate
and so much more.
What inspires me is truly anything
and sometimes it is someone I know
or someone I may never meet
like you

Imagine

How often do we miss
the messages the Universe
is sending us
because we cannot
see how things can
possibly be coming together
in a way that would change
the way we understand things.
When we dare to imagine,
we dare to discover a way of learning,
a way of understanding,
a way of seeing the Divine
and the ways of communicating
with us that were
invisible to us.
When we dare to imagine,
we can sense presence
of the one who is answering
our prayers
in ways that defy our own
understanding.
Dare to imagine
how the Divine is
speaking to and
through you.
You were given the power
to imagine;
use it.

Use Your Spiritual Imagination

So often, when we think about our imagination and using it, we think about creating something like some of artwork or creative writing. We think of works of art that we see in museums, galleries, or hear at poetry readings, writing exchanges, or even at comedy nights at local clubs. We tend to think of things that occur with some sort of external presence we have experienced or witnessed. However, as I have been thinking about imagination one last time this month, I began to think about how we can use our imagination as a way of experiencing compassion for others in all aspects of our life or even gaining a deeper understanding of any sacred texts, which are a part of one’s faith tradition.

What if we imagined the Divine in everyone and every situation that we met?

A Never Ending Story

I thought it would be fun to build on one of the Sharing Time exercises where I asked people to look at a picture of clouds and tell me what they saw. The other day I posted the image from above on my personal FB page and several of my friends used their creativity and imagination and helped write a story that began with Once upon a time. Assumptions and Imagination

Earlier today I woke up singing The Temptations song, It’s just my imagination and at first it reminded me of all the times I had been told to not be so imaginative. There are times that having an imagination can be positive and help us develop a deeper relationship with the Divine. There are also times our imagination can be harmful. One of these ways is when we use it to answer questions we don’t know the answer to. Rather than ask questions and seeking clarification, we imagine the answers. We begin to imagine what people are doing or saying. We imagine what they are thinking. Sometimes we even imagine what they are wearing, where they are sitting, and before we realize it we have created this whole story to answer a question we do not know the answer to.

Hands

Hands have always fascinated me. When I was younger, my grandmother used to let me play with her hands. Her skin, as I remember it was wrinkly, soft, and baggy. Baggy might seem like a strange word to describe skin, but it was. She would play this game with me. She would pinch my skin and it would go right back into place. Then she would let me pinch her skin and it would form little peaks and valleys. Her skin became like clay that I got to play with and create landscapes. Her skin had also become more translucent, you could see the veins, and they become streams of water flowing into the peaks and valleys I was creating in her hands. Her hands would fascinate me for hours as I sat and moved skin around creating ever-changing images.

For some this may be easier then others, but can you remember a time when you were young and free enough to think you could do anything. Take a moment and remember that time when you could imagine yourself as whatever you chose to be, you could travel to far off places and accomplish amazing things in the world. One of my favorite films is the movie UP! In part because it captures the imaginary and liberating creativity experienced by Elie and Carl as they formed a secret club and fantasized about traveling to Paradise Falls, somewhere in South America, as part of their fantasy of finding the once famous explorer Charles Muntz and his blimp The Spirit of Adventure.
